However, 1848 did not have a profound and long-lasting effect on gender relations. The women's movement, at the end of the nineteenth century, did not recognize significant improvements regarding their political programme. 39 While we are well informed about the part which 1848 played within the careers of politicians of the time,40 and while we have vast documentation at our disposal regarding the role of 1848 within the history of national movements in various regions of Europe, it seems more difficult to assess historical experiences of 1848 on a broader basis, in other words to make evaluations which go beyond the narrow definitions of political and constitutional progress.
