I am sitting here like an idiot on a seashore waiting. . for a ship! I miscalculated— my ship has passed by; when I found out about it, I rushed home to pack my bags and immediately leave for home by way of Siberia— but it turned out that it would take me a month even to get to Vladivostok because the route I had taken here is now cut off either by Chang or Fang or Wu. They hold bamboo sticks with which they paste the thighs of each and every Chinese coolie or rickshaw man that runs past.

Today, July the 14th, is the anniversary of the taking of the Bas tille, a national French holiday. Just now Loks has returned from the French consul’s in the French Concession. That is why this old sinner too spent nearly the whole of last night tramping around the French Concession.
