The fact that crows can make tools out of wire does not necessarily mean that they are sentient. But intelligence may well be linked to consciousness. That the brains of mammals, reptiles, birds amphibians and even fish share common structures and genetic backgrounds suggests quite strongly that our self-awareness is almost certainly not unique. Because not to draw this conclusion would be to assume something very strange indeed, something along Cartesian lines – that somehow, at some point in the evolution of Homo sapiens, and Homo sapiens alone, something magical invaded our skulls in the Pleistocene and set up home.

If the lives of those we had lost were as real as the lives of those still with us, would we mourn the dead like we do? Derek Parfit wrote that it would perhaps be better for us if we were ‘timeless’, treating both past and future with equal weight. Then, we would not, it is true, be relieved when a bad thing is over, but neither would we be sad when a good thing is past. We would, in a real sense, be cheating time. For a timeless person, ten hours of agony yesterday is as bad as ten hours tomorrow.

Most of these universes would be very different places and ones very challenging to life.
