Today, these proscriptions have nothing to do with gay, lesbian, and bi sexual persons in loving, caring same-gender sexual relations. They are relics of a fight that no longer needs to be waged, vestiges of a time that no longer exists. Gay people need not abstain from sexual expressions of love because of ancient strategies for ethnic and cultural purity and national survival. There is no justification for maintaining a patriarchal cultural norm that, by rigidly defining gender roles, imposes a hierarchical social order that puts men above women and denies people the freedom to love and bond with out regard to gender.

At my request, I was appointed to the United Methodist church in a village of approximately five hundred people on Ocracoke, a remote island off the North Carolina coast. Bucking Method ist tradition, in which the average length of a pastor's tenure at one church is two years, I served the Ocracoke church for eight. Then, in 1981, the bishop appointed me to be the pastor of the United Methodist church in Warsaw, a small town in eastern North Carolina.
