Gertrud Staewen was among the first Germans to taste what life under the new regime was really like. She had thrived on the changes for women in the 1920s, but they had altered her own future. She was now divorced, supporting two small children through a variety of poor-paying jobs. By 1933, she had written two books (one an oral history of working-class despair in Berlin) that were banned by the Nazi party. By May 1, some of her friends were already sitting in Gestapo prisons. Nevertheless, Staewen and a small group of friends decided, on May 1, to go to Tempelhof Field in Berlin.
